First Lithuanian-American Youth Camp Opens in Michigan with Support from Lithuanian National Guard
Camp Švyturys 2024 is a historic event as it opens the first Lithuanian-American youth camp in exile. Located in Rako Camp, Michigan, it welcomes youth aged 12-17 from Illinois, Michigan, and Florida. Supported by the Lithuanian National Guard and the Lithuanian Guards Union, this camp aims to instill patriotism and strengthen cultural heritage among the Lithuanian diaspora.
Opening Day – Sunday
Excitement is high as Sunday, August 4, marks the official start of the Camp 2024. Lithuanian-American youth, leaders, and volunteers will gather for this unique experience. The camp’s main goal is to provide a week-long environment where participants can connect with their roots and learn about Lithuanian traditions.
The First Lithuanian National Guard Camp for Youth
This camp is the result of more than half a year of preparation by dedicated enthusiasts from the Lithuanian National Guard. The program, designed in collaboration with the Lithuanian Guards Union (Lietuvos šaulių sąjunga), ensures a rich tradition of camps. Ovidijus Bernatonis, leader of the Lithuanian National Guard, and Linas Orentas, head of Švyturys Camp, have confirmed that all preparations are complete and the camp is ready to welcome the youth.
A Collaborative Effort
The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Guards Union have played a crucial role in bringing this camp to life. Their support and belief in the project have been key. Over twenty boys and girls will live in tents for a week, thanks to the local scouts who provided the campsite. This collaboration shows the strong community spirit and dedication to nurturing the next generation of Lithuanian patriots.
Registration and Activities
Upon arrival, campers will register, set up their tents, and get familiar with the camp’s environment and rules. The highlight of the first day will be the official opening ceremony, marking the start of a week filled with activities designed to foster camaraderie and cultural pride.
