Why Allied Forces on Lithuanian Soil Matter Now More Than Ever
For many in the Lithuanian diaspora, NATO is a familiar name. However, how it works on the ground – and what it means for Lithuania – can feel distant. That’s changing.
With Germany, the United States, and other allies now physically present in Lithuania, the country has gone from observer to frontline. And for Vice Minister of National Defence Tomas Godliauskas, this presence is not just about troops – it’s about confidence, cooperation, and credible defence.
In his recent interview with journalist Vilma Kava, Godliauskas shared a straightforward message about NATO’s value and its future role in the region.
Q: What role do NATO troops play in Lithuania, and how do you see NATO’s future in our region?
Tomas Godliauskas:
We see NATO as existentially vital for our region and for transatlantic security. It is and will remain the main platform for collective defence efforts.
NATO is now making major changes – developing new capabilities and transforming the defence industry. We see the EU playing a bigger role in strengthening the Alliance.
Our allies’ presence in the region is crucial.
First, for deterrence. Second, for planning coordinated military action.
Germany’s brigade presence, the deployment of U.S. troops, and other allied forces—on land, at sea, and in the air—are part of a complex, coordinated effort. Together, they form a shield protecting NATO’s eastern flank. They are also, effectively, a second strong army in Lithuania.
In the long term, this is an investment in a secure future.
Not Just Protection – Partnership
What stands out in Godliauskas’ words is the idea of co-ownership. NATO is not a foreign presence in Lithuania; it is a shared system, built on trust, planning, and joint decision-making. The arrival of German and American troops is not temporary window dressing. It’s part of a growing structure meant to stay.
The key term here is deterrence. These troops don’t just respond to problems – they help prevent them.
What the Lithuanian Diaspora Should Know
For those living in the U.S., Canada, or Europe, NATO often feels abstract – something that happens far away. But for Lithuania, it’s local and personal. That’s why members of the Lithuanian National Guard, diaspora youth, and community leaders need to remain informed and engaged.
When governments debate NATO budgets or troop deployments, diaspora voices can influence decisions. The Vice Minister’s comments are a clear signal: the more visible NATO is in Lithuania, the safer the region becomes.
A Shield That Sends a Message
NATO’s presence is not just about Lithuania. It protects the entire eastern flank, including Latvia, Estonia, and Poland. Lithuania’s investment in defence, including hosting NATO forces, is part of a much larger promise to the West: to be ready, responsible, and resilient.
This is why the Vice Minister sees it as an investment, not a burden.
Together Means Safer
For small countries like Lithuania, survival depends on alliances. And for those who left Lithuania but still care deeply about its future, supporting NATO’s role is one of the most potent ways to help.
This isn’t about politics – it’s about stability. The presence of NATO troops is not just military; it’s moral. It tells the world: Lithuania is not alone.
