Memorial Day Celebrated at Lithuanian National Cemetery

A Salute to Lithuanian-Americans in U.S. Wars

A respectful ceremony took place at the Lithuanian National Cemetery, observing Memorial Day with emphasis on the bravery and achievements of Lithuanian-Americans who have served in the U.S. military. The event featured heartfelt speeches and acts of homage, highlighting the linked destinies and histories of Lithuania and the United States.

  • Keynote Speaker: Jonas Platakis discussed the significant roles of Lithuanian-Americans in U.S. military history.
  • Awards: Plaques were presented for service both in the military and the community.
  • Tributes: The event honored both the fallen and celebrated major anniversaries of resistance leaders.
  • Ongoing Efforts: Discussions focused on Minor Lithuania highlighted its cultural and historical importance.

Celebrating Our Heroes

Jonas Platakis, the main speaker, spotlighted four notable individuals of Lithuanian heritage who contributed significantly while serving in American conflicts:

  • Feliksas Miklaševičius
  • Tadas Kosciuška
  • Ann Bernatitus
  • Stanley Bender

These individuals were honored for their military service and leadership within the community, leaving a lasting impact in both the U.S. and Lithuania.

Recognition and Remembrance

The ceremony included the presentation of commemorative plaques for military and civic service to veterans Julius Butkus and Jonas Platakis. Additionally, the event served as a tribute to all who have fallen, reinforcing our collective memory and respect for those who have given their lives in service to the United States.

The Lithuanian Guards’ Tribute

An important part of the ceremony involved the Lithuanian National Guard members visiting the grave of Jonas Polovinskas-Budrys, a leader of the uprising in the Klaipėda region, and his wife Regina Kašubaitė-Budrienė. Lithuanian National Guard in Excile Ernestas Lukoševičius reminded those present of significant milestones:

  • 60 years since the death of Jonas Budrys on September 11
  • 135 years since his birth on May 10

A moment of silence was held in Budrys’ honor, and respects were paid to Algis Regis, a key figure in the resistance movement of Minor Lithuania.

Minor Lithuania’s Continued Struggle

Algis Regis, who joined the resistance movement of Minor Lithuania in 1983 and has led it since 1990, has been outspoken about recognizing Minor Lithuania as a region with Lithuanian ethnic roots. His leadership brought attention to this unresolved issue, particularly reminding Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987 about the historical significance of the region.

The Importance of Memorial Day

The observance of Memorial Day at the Lithuanian National Cemetery is a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by both soldiers and community leaders. It connects different generations and places, stressing the shared principles and history that bind Lithuanians and Americans.

Final Note

The event ended with a sense of deep reflection and pride, renewing commitment to recognizing those who have fought for freedom and justice. The enduring connection between Lithuania and the U.S. was celebrated, ensuring the legacies of heroes past and present continue to be honored and remembered.
