Lithuania Needs Its People – No Matter Where They Live

How the Diaspora and the Lithuanian National Guard Are Becoming Part of the Country’s Defence Strategy

For many Lithuanians living abroad, especially those in the U.S. and Canada, the connection to their homeland remains strong. But today, that bond is no longer just cultural or emotional – it’s strategic. In the eyes of Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence, the diaspora is now seen as a vital part of national security.

Vice Minister Tomas Godliauskas made this clear in his interview with journalist Vilma Kava. His comments paint a picture of a modern Lithuania preparing not just to defend itself, but to rely on its global community, especially the Lithuanian National Guard and other organized diaspora efforts.

Q: What message would you like to share with Lithuanian-Americans at this geopolitical time? What connections matter most in national defence? How can the U.S. Lithuanian community help strengthen Lithuania’s defence?

Tomas Godliauskas:
As I mentioned, help doesn’t always mean carrying a weapon.

We value the diaspora’s network, their ability to leverage support in the countries they live in.

Ukraine’s experience shows that a national community in America, working with others, can mobilize powerful support for a country in need.

We understand that in a crisis, Lithuania will need its diaspora – for support, communication, and targeted action.

Their skills, experience, practice, networks, and ability to rally support may become critically important when needed.

Not Just Symbolic – Strategic

The Vice Minister’s message is clear: the Lithuanian diaspora is not an afterthought. It’s a living network with practical tools – political connections, public influence, communication reach, and financial power. These can be activated during a crisis or even before it.

This also validates the efforts of the Lithuanian National Guard, built by members of the diaspora who believe in defending the homeland in any way they can. The Ministry now recognizes these efforts as a profound contribution, not just a patriotic gesture.

Real Support Looks Different Today

In past generations, helping Lithuania may have meant flying home, raising a flag, or sending money. Today, it may involve lobbying a congressman, running an information campaign, or organizing training camps for young people.

Godliauskas’ reference to the Ukrainian example highlights that in today’s wars, international pressure, clear messaging, and humanitarian supply lines are as significant as weapons. And that’s where the diaspora – especially in democratic nations like the U.S. – can help most.

From Communities to Capabilities

What does this mean for your Lithuanian community center? Or your local Šauliai group abroad?

It means your role is bigger than you think. Organizing first-aid workshops, cyber-awareness training, or networking with local lawmakers can have a direct impact on Lithuania’s long-term strength.

It also means that Lithuanian-Americans can support or join the Lithuanian National Guard, help shape its mission, or even create structures for emergency mobilization or response.

The time of being just observers is over.

Diaspora as Force Multiplier

The Vice Minister’s closing thoughts weren’t flowery – they were practical. Lithuania doesn’t just welcome the diaspora’s help; it counts on it.

And when the next crisis comes, the strength of Lithuania may depend as much on what’s happening in Vilnius as what’s happening in Chicago, Toronto, and Los Angeles.
