Lithuanian-American Community Gathers for a Special Assumption Day Celebration in Marquette Park, IL
On Sunday, August 18th, the Lithuanian-American community gathered at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church for their regular 11 a.m. mass, led by Father Jaunius Kelpšas. But this Sunday was particular. The church was adorned with beautiful decorations, and parishioners arrived with bouquets, many wearing wreaths made of herbs and blossoms. Although the celebration was a few days late, the community had come together for the Žolinė Celebration 2024 event – the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Honoring the Assumption
Father Jaunius reminded the congregation that August 15th is a national holiday in Lithuania, allowing people to celebrate this significant feast day fully. The Assumption commemorates the belief that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was taken into Heaven with her body and soul due to her unique role in salvation history. According to tradition, when her tomb was opened after her death, it was found to contain only sweet-smelling flowers.
A Day of Worship and Blessings
In America, where not everyone can take time off on August 15th, such important feasts are celebrated on the nearest Sunday. During the mass, Father Jaunius’ thoughtful sermon and the beautiful singing of Agnė Giedraitytė uplifted the congregation. As the mass drew to a close, parishioners exchanged wishes of peace, and Father Jaunius blessed the congregation with their wreaths, bouquets, and other gifts brought to the church.
Festivities in the Parish Hall
After the mass, everyone was invited to the parish hall for a traditional Žolinė meal, wreath-making, and lively festivities. Inesa Makaras, Chairwoman of the Lithuanian American Community’s Marquette Park chapter, welcomed everyone warmly. Board member Silvija Motiejūnas shared a brief history of Žolinė (Celebrating Lithuania’s Heritage on Assumption Day), explaining its significance in the Christian world and its rich traditions. Antanas Rašymas, Director of the Lithuanian Youth Center, spoke English to guests who did not understand Lithuanian.
A Joyful Celebration
With a prayer and blessing from Father Jaunius, the feast began. The delicious meal, prepared by the Board of Lithuanian American Community’s Marquette Park chapter, was followed by joyful entertainment. Egle Makaraitė led a lively karaoke session, with church organist Ričardas Sokas, Egle Makaras, and many guests singing popular Lithuanian songs, while others shared traditional Lithuanian folk tunes. Soon, couples took to the floor, dancing to their favorite melodies, eventually becoming a communal dance circle that included everyone – even those experiencing Assumption for the first time.
Wreath Making Station
As a part of Žolinės festivities, guests were given various live herbs, flowers, and greens to make their wreaths. All participants of this activity pose for a lively picture towards the end of the festivities.
Honoring a Milestone
During the celebration, the community also took a moment to honor Aldona Krištolaitis on her 80th birthday, and everyone enjoyed a slice of her birthday cake. The festivities were brought to a memorable close with Ken Pannaralla renditions of Frank Sinatra as Elvis Presley classics and Andrea Bocelli’s “Con te partiro” (“It’s time to say goodbye”), leaving everyone with warm hearts and smiles.
