Paying Tribute on Partisan Remembrance Day
The day started with a flower-laying ceremony at the monument of Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, a key figure in the fight against Soviet rule. Participants honored his memory under a clear sky, showing respect and gratitude for those who fought for Lithuania’s freedom.
Afterwards, the event moved to a nearby forest. Here, attendees took part in a symbolic march and a Sunday run, dedicated to remembering the Lithuanian partisans and freedom fighters. These activities represented the hardships and determination faced by those who resisted tyranny.
Remembering Romas Kalanta
In the afternoon, participants gathered at the St. Casimir Cemetery, at the monument dedicated to Romas Kalanta and all who died fighting Soviet oppression. This monument, erected in 1979 by the Lithuanian National Guard in exile, is the only one for Romas Kalanta outside Lithuania. Kalanta’s act of protest in 1972 became a powerful symbol of resistance against Soviet rule.
Community Gathering and Reflection
The 52nd anniversary of Romas Kalanta’s death brought together many people, including members of the Lithuanian National Guard, representatives from the Lithuanian community, and other organizations. Guests from Lithuania, such as Edita Mildažytė, joined the remembrance.
The gathering featured shared memories, patriotic poems, and the singing of freedom songs. This created a strong sense of unity and reflection as participants honored the sacrifices of Kalanta and others for Lithuania’s freedom.
The Enduring Spirit of Romas Kalanta
Romas Kalanta’s ideals continue to inspire Lithuanians of all ages and backgrounds. His legacy is a reminder to stand against oppression and value freedom and independence.
