Honoring Mykolas Abarius

impactful life and enduring memorial of Mykolas Abarius at The War Museum in Kaunas

The Vytautas the Great War Museum hosts an extensive exhibit highlighting the significant contributions of Mykolas Abarius, a pivotal figure in the Lithuanian National Guard.

Remembering a Distinguished Leader

Mykolas Abarius led the National Guard of Lithuania from 1987 to 2012. After his death on February 11, 2022, his commitment to his community and country lives on through his artifacts, now housed at the Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas, Lithuania.

From Antazavė to the World

Born in Antazavė in 1926, Mykolas Abarius witnessed the struggles of pre-war Lithuania. World War II and the threat of Soviet control pushed him to move to the United States in 1949, following a stay in Germany. He studied at Henry Ford College in the United States and spent thirty years working at Ford as an engineer.

A Central Community Figure

In the U.S., Abarius became a key member of the Lithuanian community, notably within the National Guard in Exile. His leadership was essential during the reformation of the Union within Lithuania in 1989.

The Collection: A Link to Lithuanian Heritage

The museum now displays over 65 of Abarius’ belongings, donated by his daughter, Violeta Abariūtė-Viviano. This collection includes:

  • The Vytis Cross Medal: Given for courage in defense of Lithuania’s freedom.
  • The Freedom Fights Cross: For contributions to Lithuania’s independence efforts.
  • The Grand Duke Gediminas Medal: For significant public service, one of Lithuania’s top honors.

Additional artifacts include:

  • Personal Telegrams: Correspondences that reflect his active engagement with the global Lithuanian community.
  • Berets and Identification Badges: Symbols of his military and organizational affiliations.
  • Personalized Timepieces and Uniforms: Intimate items that reflect his personal style and the era he lived through.

Exhibition and Its Educational Role

This exhibition helps visitors understand Abarius’ role in maintaining Lithuanian heritage. It offers a full look at his work both abroad and in Lithuania, showing how he helped shape the identity of the Lithuanian community through difficult times.

A Lasting Influence

The exhibit not only stores the history of Abarius’ work but also serves to inspire and teach future generations about the strength and patriotism of the Lithuanian people.
