Remembering the Victims of Soviet Deportations
On June 16, 2024, the Lithuanian National Guard participated in events in Chicago to mark the Day of Mourning and Hope. This day, focused on reflecting on our history and looking forward with hope, gathered the Lithuanian community to pay respects to those affected by Soviet deportations.
Honoring the Victims
The event started with a moving Holy Mass at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, led by Father Jaunius Kelpšas. The Mass focused on remembering those who endured Soviet oppression and honoring those who were deported. The church welcomed many from the Lithuanian diaspora, who came together in shared remembrance and respect.
Preserving Historical Memory
The dark history of Soviet deportations in Lithuania is a fundamental part of our collective memory. Remembering these past wrongs is essential, and such events help reinforce our duty to remember. The Day of Mourning and Hope serves as both a time to grieve and an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to remember these events.
Event Highlights
This commemoration was more than a remembrance; it was also a plea for future generations to continue valuing their heritage and history. Participants reflected on the resilience and strength of those affected by the deportations and of the Lithuanian people as a whole.
We invite you to join us next year to continue recognizing our past while looking forward to a hopeful future.
