Building Strength, Skills, and Unity as the Camp Nears Its End
As the sun rose on Day 6 of Švyturys Camp 2024, Lithuanian American youth from across the United States showed off the skills they’ve picked up over the past week. They started as a group unfamiliar with the basics of outdoor survival, and now they’re a strong unit. They can handle a six-kilometer hike through Michigan’s wooded hills, navigate using a compass, and perform tricky rope work.
Today marks the sixth day of the first Lithuanian National Guard camp designed for Lithuanian American youth. This camp is a big step in helping these young people connect with their Lithuanian roots. It allows them to learn about traditional Lithuanian military practices and values.
Physical and Mental Growth
A standout activity today was a six-kilometer hike through Michigan’s dense forests. What seemed tough at the beginning of the week is now a challenge they can manage. The hike tested their endurance and teamwork. Each camper used a compass and leaned on their friends to successfully complete the trail.
Lunch was a special experience. The campers got to try military rations provided by the U.S. Army. They were introduced to various meals, including vegetarian options, and learned how to heat them so they were hot and ready to eat. This practical lesson was paired with an introduction to Lithuanian military rations, allowing the campers to see the differences and similarities and learn more about military life.
Inspection and Recognition
Today, the camp had a thorough inspection by Michigan State authorities. They checked all the permits and licenses needed for the camp. The camp earned the highest possible rating thanks to the hard work and dedication of the organizers, especially Camp Director Linas Orentas. Linas is a member of the Lithuanian National Guard, Švyturys Company in Detroit, and his careful preparation ensured the camp met all the necessary requirements. This made sure the camp was safe and educational for everyone.
A Visit from the Lithuanian Consulate
The campers were honored by a visit from Julijonas Matukas, an attaché from the Consulate General of Lithuania in Chicago. His visit highlighted the growing relationship between the Lithuanian National Guard in exile and the Lithuanian government. It also emphasized how important this camp is in promoting Lithuanian culture and heritage among the diaspora.
A Musical Tribute to the Sea Scouts
During the camp, the campers were introduced to a special song called “Jūros Šaulių Maršas” (Sea Scouts’ March), composed by Nikolajus Juzeliūnas, the head of the Lithuanian Sea Scout Company in Norway, and his cousin. The notes and lyrics of this march were shared with everyone, providing a meaningful way to honor the Sea Scouts’ legacy.
This musical experience helped the campers connect with their Lithuanian heritage, making a piece of their culture come alive through song.
Evening Reflections and Preparations for Tomorrow
As the day ended, the campers took part in a special evening ceremony, getting ready for the final day of camp. The campgrounds were cleaned up carefully, making sure they were left in the same good condition as when they were first used. The camp’s kitchen volunteers created a festive atmosphere with decorated tables and balloons, adding a joyful touch to the last night of the camp.
One of the highlights was a traditional Lithuanian dish called “Kelmas,” prepared by Felicija Jablonskis, a member of the Lithuanian National Guard, Klaipėda Company in Cicero. Felicija took the time to thank each camp leader, recognizing the huge effort they put into making the camp a success. She also shared a thoughtful message with the campers, comparing life to a journey where we collect good deeds like items in a suitcase. She wished them the best memories from their time at Švyturys Camp 2024.
Final Night and Tomorrow’s Farewell
Tonight, the campers will gather around the campfire one last time, with the flames burning a bit longer than usual, signaling that their time at Švyturys Camp is almost over. Each of the three groups the campers were divided into will present a program they’ve prepared, showing their creativity and teamwork.
As the flags are lowered and the campers reflect on what they’ve learned, they know that tomorrow is the final day of this amazing experience. The bonds they’ve formed, the skills they’ve gained, and the pride they’ve developed in their Lithuanian heritage will stay with them long after the camp ends.
