Day 4 in Svyturys Camp 2024 - Asking questions

Campers Learn Water Filtration and Military Life at Švyturys Camp 2024

Today marks the 4th day of Švyturys Camp 2024, a unique summer camp organized by the Lithuanian National Guard for youth of Lithuanian descent in America. This camp aims to instill a sense of heritage, discipline, and practical skills among its participants. Wednesday, August 6, was a day dedicated to water skills and military education, providing campers with invaluable experiences and knowledge.

Water Filtration Training

The morning session began with an essential survival skill: water filtration. Clean drinking water is vital for survival in the wilderness and during emergencies. Without proper filtration, water can carry harmful bacteria, viruses, and chemicals, leading to severe health issues. Understanding the importance of this skill, experienced camp leaders demonstrated various methods to purify water, including using small stones, charcoal, and other natural resources. These practical lessons were not just theoretical; campers were divided into groups and tasked with filtering water, fostering teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

After successfully purifying the water, the campers enjoyed a refreshing swim in a nearby lake, a favorite activity that always boosts morale and camaraderie. Swimming in natural bodies of water, such as lakes, helps connect the campers to nature and promotes physical fitness.

Military Greetings and Educational Sessions

A significant highlight of the day was a special greeting from prominent figures in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, and Stasys Ignatavičius, President of the V. Putvinskis – Pūtvio Club, extended their best wishes to the campers and organizers. This recognition was a proud moment for everyone involved, reinforcing the camp’s importance and impact. Such greetings from high-ranking officials underscore the significance of the camp’s mission to foster a sense of national pride and belonging among young Lithuanian-Americans.

Continuing with the military theme, representatives from the Panevėžys division of the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ Conscription and Recruitment Service visited the camp. Captain Rasa Grigalienė, Staff Sergeant Renaldas Stuknys, and Corporal Borisas Bylinskis provided insights into the structure and operations of the Lithuanian military, including NATO missions and international collaborations. They emphasized the role of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in ensuring national security and contributing to global peacekeeping efforts. Their presentations sparked curiosity among the campers, who eagerly asked questions about the nine-month service requirement and the role of women in the military.

Personal Stories and Reflections

The day concluded with a poignant story shared by a volunteer, member of the Lithuania National Guard, Klaipėda Company, Felicija Jablonskis. Born in Siberia to deported Lithuanian parents, Felicija recounted her family’s harrowing experiences under Soviet oppression. Her narrative was a powerful reminder of Lithuania’s turbulent history and the resilience of its people. The campers listened attentively, asking numerous questions that deepened their understanding of their heritage. Felicija’s story not only provided historical context but also served as a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Lithuanian spirit.

One of the campers, Ąžuolas Paulauskas, expressed his enthusiasm for the camp, highlighting the diverse activities and new skills he had acquired. His testimonial underscored the camp’s success in providing a meaningful and enriching experience for young Lithuanian-Americans. The opportunity to engage with their heritage, learn practical skills, and hear inspiring stories from individuals like Felicija has left a lasting impact on the campers.

The Importance of Heritage and Skills Development

Švyturys Camp 2024 is more than just a summer camp; it is a platform for young Lithuanian-Americans to connect with their roots and develop essential life skills. The camp’s activities are designed to foster a sense of community, leadership, and resilience among the participants. By learning about water filtration, the campers gain practical skills that can be crucial in emergencies. Moreover, the military education sessions provide them with a deeper understanding of national defense and the role of the armed forces in maintaining peace and security.
