Overcoming Rainy Weather and Embracing Learning at the First Lithuanian-American Youth Camp
Švyturys Camp 2024, the first camp designed for Lithuanian-American youth, continues to foster resilience and learning despite challenging weather conditions. On Day 3, campers showed remarkable adaptability and enthusiasm as they engaged in various activities designed to enhance their skills and build camaraderie.
A Rainy Start to the Day
Tuesday, August 6th, marked the third day of Švyturys Camp 2024. The day began with heavy rain that had been pouring since the previous night. At 7 AM, the sound of the rain was the only thing that campers could hear outside their tents. The persistent downpour set the tone for a slower-paced day, with activities adjusted to suit the indoor environment.
Campers, showing the preparedness of seasoned campers, donned rain gear and suitable footwear to navigate the wet conditions. The day’s schedule was modified to accommodate the weather, with most activities taking place under shelter.
Engaging Topography Exercises
Despite the rain, the enthusiasm for learning remained high. The day featured an extended session on topography, where campers spent two and a half hours deeply engaged in theoretical and practical exercises. The session concluded with an interactive game similar to “Battleship,” where campers applied their knowledge of coordinate systems.
Enjoyable Meals
To brighten the rainy day, the camp’s skilled volunteer cooks prepared pizza for lunch. This treat brought joy to the children, showcasing the effort put into ensuring they enjoyed their meals. Photos of the meals shared with parents and guardians highlighted the appetizing and nutritious food served at the camp.
Learning Fire-Building Techniques
As the evening approached, the focus shifted to learning essential outdoor survival skills. Campers were taught various methods to start a fire, with a particular interest in using batteries and birch bark, which burns even when wet. Three teams were tasked with building a fire capable of burning through a suspended string, a challenge that required both skill and teamwork.
Making S’mores and Bonding
The day concluded with campers making s’mores – a classic campfire treat consisting of graham crackers, melted marshmallows, and chocolate. This activity not only provided a sweet end to the day but also fostered a sense of community and friendship among the campers.
Overcoming Homesickness and Building Friendships
By the third day, many campers had overcome initial homesickness. They were forming new friendships and developing their interests, making the camp experience even more enjoyable. The camp environment, resembling a small corner of Lithuania, provided a comforting and familiar setting for these young participants.
