Day 2: Thrills and Skills

Day 2 in Svyturys Camp 2024

Lithuanian-American Youth Learn and Grow at Svyturys Camp

Švyturys Camp 2024, the first camp for Lithuanian-American youth, has started with great energy. August 5th marked the second day of this new initiative by the Lithuanian National Guard, aimed at building a sense of community and heritage among young Lithuanians in America.

Morning Challenges & Nature’s Surprises

The day began with a bit of uncertainty as the night before had been stormy, with lightning flashing across the sky. Campers learned how to find safe shelter during a storm, a skill that, fortunately, did not need to be used. As the morning went on, the sun broke through the clouds, making way for a planned swim in the lake. The hike to the lake, a peaceful spot surrounded by trees, was eagerly awaited by all. The sight of the sun sparkling on the water lifted everyone’s spirits.

Swimming in the lake was a welcome break from the heat, and the campers splashed and played with enthusiasm. The camaraderie and laughter that filled the air showed the strong bonds being formed.

Fishing Fun & Environmental Awareness

One of the highlights of the day was fishing. The campers were excited to test their patience and skill. The most successful fisher of the day caught a fish suitable for cooking but decided to release it back into the lake, showing respect for nature. This act of releasing the fish led to a discussion among the campers and leaders about conservation and the importance of keeping balance in the ecosystem.

The fishing activity was not only enjoyable but also educational, teaching the young participants about the delicate balance between humans and nature. The satisfaction of catching a fish was paired with the understanding of why it’s important to sometimes let them go.

Camouflage & Teamwork

The afternoon was filled with activities led by the camp leaders. One of the most exciting sessions involved learning the art of camouflage. Campers were taught how to blend into their surroundings, a skill that was both fun and educational. They painted their faces with camouflage paint, taking selfies and group photos to capture the moment. The process of learning to camouflage was hands-on and interactive, allowing campers to experiment with different techniques.

In addition to camouflage, the campers practiced knot tying and simulated river crossings using ropes. These activities were not only fun but also helped develop their teamwork and problem-solving skills. The leaders emphasized the importance of each skill in practical scenarios, helping the campers understand their relevance.

Daily Traditions & Nighttime Reflections

Every day at the camp starts at 7 AM with the raising of the flags and ends at 10 PM with their lowering. These ceremonies are a meaningful tradition, instilling a sense of discipline and respect among the campers. The flag ceremonies bookend the day with moments of reflection and national pride, fostering a deeper connection to their Lithuanian heritage.

As the day came to a close, the campers gathered around a large campfire under the star-filled Michigan sky. Despite the fatigue from a day full of activities, their spirits remained high, and the campfire provided a perfect setting for reflection and bonding. The stories shared, songs sung, and the warmth of the fire created an atmosphere of camaraderie and unity.

The campfire discussions often focused on the day’s experiences, with campers and leaders alike sharing their thoughts and feelings. This time around the fire not only strengthened friendships but also reinforced the lessons learned throughout the day.
