Inaugural Lithuanian Youth Camp in the U.S. Begins with Excitement and Enthusiasm
The Lithuanian National Guard has launched its first Švyturys Camp for American Lithuanian youth. This event, held on August 4, 2024, starts a week-long program to strengthen cultural ties and build a sense of responsibility among young Lithuanian-Americans.
Day 1 Overview
On the first day, over twenty children aged 12-17 from Illinois, Michigan, and Florida came to the camp. The day began with health checks and document verification. Then, the children set up their tents and got settled in. This self-sufficiency is a key part of the camp’s philosophy, aimed at teaching valuable life skills.
Key Activities
- Orientation and Safety Briefing. The day began with a detailed orientation session. Camp leaders stressed the importance of safety and teamwork. This was followed by the first marching drill, where the children were divided into squads.
- Flag-Raising Ceremony. A highlight of the day was the flag-raising ceremony. The children proudly hoisted the flags of the United States, Lithuania, and the Lithuanian National Guard, symbolizing their unity and heritage.
- Camp Setup and Team Building. The children set up their tents, fostering a sense of independence and teamwork. This was a transformative experience for many, as they shifted from being dependent on their parents to taking on responsibilities themselves.
- Dinner and Campfire. The day ended with a traditional Lithuanian dinner and a campfire. This provided a chance for the campers to bond, share stories, and begin forming lasting friendships.
