Celebrating Dedication and Service in Lithuania’s Proud History
Recognizing Our Leaders
This year marks a major milestone for the Lithuanian Riflemen Union (Lietuvos Šaulių Sąjunga) – its 105th anniversary. Dr. Laurynas Kasčiūnas, Minister of National Defense, celebrated this special anniversary by presenting the Defense System Medal of Merit to the exiled commander of the Lithuanian National Guard, Ovidijus Bernatonis, and his advisor, Gintautas Vasilevskis. Their efforts continue to strengthen the Guard’s connections, even from afar.
Three Days of Commemoration
The events stretched over three days, filled with historic reflections and traditions. On June 29, attendees gathered at St. Michael the Archangel Church to start a march. This march went 160 kilometers along routes significant in Lithuania’s battles for independence, concluding with a solemn mass.
Precision and Pride
Armed and in the formation, the marchers moved from the church to the Vytautas the Great War Museum. Led by Deputy Commander Colonel Lieutenant Gediminas Latvys and accompanied by the Military Air Force Orchestra, their disciplined march was a display of pride.
Highlights from the War Museum Ceremony
The ceremony in the museum garden started with the carillon bell and the raising of the Cross of Vytis flag. Distinguished guests, including First Lady Diana Nausėdienė, delivered speeches and expressed the President’s thanks, emphasizing the Guard’s lasting legacy.
Learning and Engagement
The anniversary also included interactive displays, allowing visitors to examine modern military equipment, operate drones, and look at various Guard items. Vytaras Radzevičius, editor of Trimitas magazine, enhanced the experience by preparing large pots of mushroom soup.
Musical Finale
The event concluded with music from bands “Gedimino Sapnas” and Thundertale, and the Žemaitija National Guard Orchestra, providing a festive end to the celebrations.
